Backing the Future: How Echelon is Powering Wicklow GAA’s Next Generation
In Wicklow, the GAA is more than a sporting institution. It’s the heartbeat of the county. From the hills of Hollywood to the shores of Arklow, football and hurling weave generations together – on muddy pitches, at kitchen tables, and through shared stories of county pride.
But while passion runs deep, turning young talent into tomorrow’s stars takes more than tradition. It takes investment, vision, and partnership. That’s what Echelon Data Centres is bringing to the table.
In 2022, Echelon announced a five-year partnership with Wicklow GAA, committing €1.5 million to support the development of football and hurling across the county. At the heart of this investment is the Garden County Academy, a high-performance pathway nurturing players from under-14 to senior level. It’s a bold step towards elevating Wicklow’s sporting future, and a powerful example of business and community working hand in hand.
The future is here
That future is arriving fast. Just last weekend, Wicklow’s senior footballers delivered a massive victory over Westmeath in the Tailteann Cup quarter-final, booking their place in the semi-finals at Croke Park. This Sunday, the county will descend on GAA headquarters to face Limerick in a semi-final showdown that could bring Wicklow one step closer to silverware.
A day out at Croker is a huge occasion for any county – but for Wicklow, whose footballers and hurlers have often battled in the shadows of bigger teams, it’s a moment of pride, belief, and hard-earned progress. It’s also a powerful reminder of why support at every level – from grassroots to county squad – matters so much.
That support came to life recently at the Wicklow GAA Echelon Centre of Excellence in Ballinakill, where young footballers from the under-14 to under-17 development squads gathered to receive new training gear and match jerseys – made possible by Echelon’s sponsorship. As the players zipped up their new gear, it was clear that this was about more than clothing. It was about confidence, unity, and belief in the journey ahead.
As Gavin Weir, Strength & Conditioning Coach with Wicklow GAA, said: “Sport is about building resilience and character. What Echelon’s support gives us is structure, continuity, and standards. We’re not just preparing players for the next match – we’re preparing them for life.”
Powering Communities
Echelon’s sponsorship has enabled the Garden County Academy to expand its dedicated coaching capacity, introduce more sophisticated strength and conditioning programmes, tailored nutritional advice, and clear development pathways that aren’t just focused on physical fitness – but also on values like teamwork, discipline, and leadership.
For Echelon, which is developing two data centre campuses in Wicklow, this partnership goes beyond corporate responsibility. As COO Graeme McWilliams explained: “At Echelon, we believe in powering more than data – we’re here to power people, passion, and progress in the communities where we operate.
“Our partnership with Wicklow GAA isn’t just building better players – it’s building stronger communities, because when you back sport, you back everything that comes with it.”
With the county preparing for a massive day out at Croke Park, there’s a renewed energy in Wicklow GAA, from the club grassroots through to the senior squad heroes that youngsters dream of one day emulating. The journey to the top is long, but with the right support, Wicklow football is not just hoping for a brighter future – it’s building it.
