Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA)

Why DfMA is Critical to Echelon’s Delivery Model

As global demand for digital infrastructure accelerates, data centre developers are under unprecedented pressure to deliver capacity faster, more efficiently, and with greater certainty than ever before. At Echelon, meeting this challenge requires more than incremental improvement to traditional construction methods – it demands a fundamental shift in how we design, engineer, and build our facilities. That shift is Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA).

DfMA is not simply an offsite construction technique; it is an engineeringled delivery philosophy that integrates design, manufacturing, logistics, and site installation into a single, optimised process. For Echelon, DfMA is a strategic enabler that directly supports our mission to deliver largescale, resilient, and sustainable data centre infrastructure for hyperscale clients.

Designing for manufacture and assembly

Echelon designs key elements of our infrastructure with manufacture and assembly in mind. By prefabricating suitable components – such as power, cooling and structural systems – in controlled environments, we improve quality control, reduce on-site activity and simplify installation when those components are deployed on site.

This approach allows manufacturing and site works to progress in parallel, improving coordination across the delivery programme.

When applied appropriately, DfMA helps us to:

  • Create programme certainty in a hyperscale environment
  • Improve consistency and quality through standardised, repeatable solutions
  • Scale to meet demand
  • Support sustainable and responsible delivery
  • Reduce on-site congestion and safety risk
  • Increase visibility across sequencing and programme dependencies
  • Build the future of data centre delivery

DfMA: The Cornerstone of Our Delivery Strategy

DfMA represents a stepchange in how data centres are delivered – and at Echelon, it is a cornerstone of our engineering and construction strategy. By combining deep technical expertise with industrialised delivery methods, we are better positioned to meet the evolving needs of hyperscale clients while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and sustainability.

As demand continues to grow, DfMA will remain a critical differentiator for Echelon – enabling us to deliver faster, smarter, and with greater certainty, today and into the future.
