Echelon Data Centres has commissioned KPMG to carry out an independent study on the economic impact of large-scale data centre infrastructure. The research, which focused on Echelon’s DUB20 and DUB0 sites in Ireland, provides valuable insight into the benefits these facilities deliver to local and regional economies. While centred on Irish projects, the findings are relevant and applicable across Europe, where demand for digital infrastructure continues to grow.

The report sets out in detail the range of positive outcomes created by developments of this scale, from foreign investment to job creation and infrastructure delivery. It makes a clear case for why data centres should be considered not only as critical digital infrastructure but also as drivers of long-term economic growth.

According to KPMG’s analysis, large-scale data centres contribute by:

  • Attracting foreign direct investment that strengthens local economies and supports international business ties

  • Creating direct and indirect employment during construction and through ongoing operational needs

  • Delivering amenities and infrastructure that provide value to surrounding communities and businesses

  • Supporting national and international technology ecosystems, ensuring regions remain competitive in the digital economy

These findings demonstrate the important role that data centre projects play beyond their immediate function. By providing critical capacity, they also generate economic, social, and technological benefits that extend far beyond their sites.
